Insights into the Simultaneous Sorption of Ciprofloxacin and Heavy Metals Using Functionalized Biochar

Biochar and chitosan are considered as green cost-effective adsorbents for water purification; the combination of these two materials may lead to an improved adsorption capacity generated adsorbents. Most sorption studies have been focused on ability adsorb one contaminant or same type contaminants. Thus, this study aimed produce chitosan-biochar beads (CH-BB) test their efficiency in simultaneous removal a metal-complexing antibiotic, ciprofloxacin (CIP), three metal(loid)s (As, Cd Pb). Modification raw pig manure biochar resulted increase its capacity, except Pb. The highest increment was observed As (almost 6-fold) lowest CIP (1.1-fold). adsorbent able simultaneously remove all targeted contaminants, individually mixture. CH-BB followed order: Pb > >As CIP. When were present mixture, increased from 0.13 ± 0.01 0.26 0.05 mg/g 0.75 0.08 0.85 0.02 due co-precipitation. CIP–metal complexation probably reduced inorganics decreased concentration free ions. presence metals metalloids led alterations CIP’s mobility.
